Celtic Heritage Tent

The Celtic Heritage Tent is the Williamsburg Scottish Festival center for hosting various aspects or our Celtic heritage. Our talented Celtic folk singers, harpists, dancers, Scottish historians and Highlander Bagpipes will endeavor to enrich your day with the finer side of our Celtic heritage. This year we have a premium line-up of Festival favorites, and even some new additions. Bill Darrow is a longtime friend and our key performer again this year. Bill is also our key entertainment at the Friday night Balmoral Society social. To establish a new tradition for the Williamsburg Scottish Festival, this year we will start debuting up and coming local Celtic musicians--our featured band this year is Salted Cod. Please check-out our schedule below and the write-ups on a few of our performers.

Bill Darrow

A longtime friend of the Williamsburg Scottish Festival, we are delighted to announce that Bill Darrow will be one of the headliners at the Celtic Heritage Tent. Following his distinguished service in the USMC in Viet Nam and later as a police officer, Bill began a new life as a folk singer. He cut his first album, “Away Haul Away” in 1987 and has recorded a number of well received albums since then. His later albums include “Songs of the Sea,” “My Hearts in the Highlands,” “Civil War Memories,” and “The Highland Cloth.” In addition to the Williamsburg Scottish Festival, throughout the years Bill has performed as a folk-singer/song-writer at clubs such as, The White Horse Pub, Paddy’s Hollow, The Dram Tree Restaurant, and at several Folk Arts Festivals and other events, Bill also has an interesting film career. He appeared in the film “In Harm’s Way,” staring John Wayne and Kirk Douglas. For the movie “High Velocity,” he wrote all the action scenes, developed new characters, wrote much of the dialog, and did all the stunt work for Ben Gazzara and Paul Winfield. He was also one of the first Marlboro Men on T.V., appearing from 1974 to 1976.

Bill lives with his wife Betty and his little Shitzu “Brandy” in Hertford, NC.

Bill has four children and four grandchildren. Make plans to visit the Celtic Heritage Tent and enjoys the talents of balladeer Bill Darrow.

SALTED COD

SALTED COD?? Indeed: that which has appealed to and nourished pauper and king for centuries. Weddings, wakes, liberty, rebellion, drink'n and fight'n - all the essential ingredients for moving, traditional Celtic Music. From Asia, the Middle East, Europe and the most remote pubs in the US, these two local musicians have pulled together a collection of those Celtic songs we all know by heart (or need to know). Whether the rough, driving songs from Ron's bodhran or the gentle, melodic, sometimes haunting tunes of Lisa's fiddle, you are sure to enjoy these classics sounds.
